McDermand Handles Humboldt for Xtreme Honors!

Lonnie Wheatley, HUMBOLDT, Kan. (May 5, 2023) – Chase McDermand notched his second career Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series feature win by topping Friday night’s 30-lap main event as the series made its debut atop the ¼-mile Humboldt Speedway clay oval.

The Springfield, IL, racer battled past race-long leader Ashton Torgerson on the 23rd circuit and held the point the rest of the way to post the win aboard the Rockwell Security/McDermand Plumbing Mounce-Stout Motorsports No. 40 machine.

“He (Torgerson) started running the top again how he had been so I knew I was good in the middle, there was a thin strip off of two in the middle where I could make ground when they would struggle to get off the top,” McDermand explained of the winning move.

In the accompanying USAC Midwest Wingless Racing Association Sprint Car feature, Chad Goff held off late charges from Ty Hulsey and then Braydon Cromwell for victory honors in the 25-lapper.

While McDermand gridded the Xtreme Outlaw Midget feature field inside the third row, it was front row outside starter outgunning pole starter Landon Brooks for the point at the drop of the green flag.

Weathering four interruptions over the initial nine circuits, McDermand sat fourth before disposing of Cannon McIntosh and Brooks in a heated battle for second before setting his sights on Torgerson for the lead.

Following a final caution after 19 laps for a stalled mount in turn four, McDermand put the pressure on Torgerson before finally racing into the lead exiting turn two on the 23rd round.  McIntosh followed suit soon after but was unable to chase McDermand down in the final circuits.

“We had to work for a little bit, I thing moving around and racing guys good on the restarts helped us out,” McIntosh explained after racing from ninth to claim runner-up honors and take over the Xtreme series points lead.

Torgerson settled for the show position aboard the Tanne Thorson entry, explaining that,”I should have gone down there and taken that line and seen what I could have got down there.  It’s alright, second night in a Midget so we’ll take it.”

Thomas Meseraull rallied from 12th to claim fourth with Daniel Whitley rounding out the top five as Jade Avedisian, Gavin Miller, 18th-starter Zach Daum, Chance Crum and Don Droud, Jr., completed the top ten.

Emilio Hoover and Hayden Reinbold both had rough encounters with the outside turn one concrete in the opening nine circuits to bring out separate red flags.

After entering the night atop Xtreme Outlaw Midget points, Kyle Jones pulled to infield after the lap 19 caution with mechanical woes to bring an early end to his night.

In the USAC MWRA Sprint Car feature, Goff battled past early pacesetter Brad Wyatt after a handful of laps to take command.  Hulsey moved into second soon after and closed in over the closing laps only to have the red flag fly on the final circuit when Chris Parkinson tumbled into turn one after contact with Wyatt Burks while battling for third.

On the green-white-checkered restart, third-runner Cromwell took advantage of a Hulsey miscue on the final circuit and made a last-lap run on Goff only to fall less than two car-lengths short at the checkered flag.  While Goff, Cromwell and Hulsey made up the podium, Texas shoe Kobe Simpson and Chad Winfrey rounded out the top five.

“I realized when we pushed back off after the red that our brakes were boiled, so the brake pedal was on the floor,” Goff explained afterward.  “The last lap going into one, I jumped the cushion and by the grace of God it bit and turned.”

In preliminary action, Gavin Miller set the overall quickest time and a track record in Xtreme Outlaw Midget qualifying with a lap of 13.717 seconds before Chance Crum, Avedisian and Ethan Mitchell topped heat race action with Taylor Reimer winning the “B” Main.

Goff and Wyatt posted USAC MWRA heat race wins.
