The Weekend Ahead: March 3-6

Lonnie Wheatley, BROKEN ARROW, Okla. (March 2, 2023) – As we roll into March, Open Wheel dirt track action begins to ramp up slightly with a mix of Outlaws, Posse, USAC/CRA and USCS this weekend.

The weekend launches Friday night with USCS and USAC/CRA both kicking off weekend doubleheaders in Mississippi and Arizona, respectively, along with a pop-up 360-ci race at Marysville Raceway in California.

The United Sprint Car Series (USCS) continues its Winter Heat Series with the first pair of events outside of Florida as it takes to Mississippi’s Hattiesburg Speedway on Friday and Saturday.  New Jersey’s Davie Franek holds a 38 point advantage over Iowa’s Chris Martin through six completed events after Terry McCarl swept last weekend’s pair of events in Milton, FL.  While McCarl doubled up last weekend, other Winter Heat winners include Franek along with Ryan Timms, Mark Smith and Tyler Clem.

Dale Howard topped four of six USCS events at Hattiesburg last year with Michael Miller and Shane Morgan also posting wins.

USAC/CRA resumes action with a two-night stand at Casa Grande’s Central Arizona Speedway on Friday and Saturday.  Brody Roa tries to remain unbeaten after sweeping the opening pair of events at Cocopah on the last weekend of January with past nemesis Damion Gardner in retirement mode.

Marysville has made a last-minute decision to make up last weekend’s Toller Memorial for winged 360-ci Sprint Cars on Friday night. Andy Forsberg topped last year’s Toller, his third career win at the event.

The Posse has a pair of matinee events on tap with Lincoln Speedway on Saturday and then the Port Royal season opener on Sunday.

Lincoln Speedway kicked off the Central Pennsylvania season with last weekend’s Ice Breaker with defending track champion Freddie Rahmer topping the Thursday night opener and then Justin Peck taking Sunday afternoon honors.

Lance Dewease topped last year’s Port Royal opener over a field of 42 cars before Logan Wagner went on to win the season championship.  Anthony Macri topped last year’s Port Royal win charts with 10 triumphs.

Rounding out the weekend is the World of Outlaws return to Florida’s Volusia Speedway Park on Sunday and Monday.  Sunday’s card kicks off with the finale of the DIRTcar Nationals feature event that was postponed by rain.  David Gravel will try to make it three in a row to open the season after sweeping through the opening two nights of WoO action before embarking upon a full card on Sunday and then Monday’s Florida finale before heading to Port Royal next weekend.

This weekend’s scheduled Silver Cup at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway has already succumbed to Mother Nature.

EDIT: The USAC/CRA double at Central Arizona Speedway has since rained out.
