Lonnie Wheatley (July 16, 2022) – A new king has been crowned.
Myerstown, Pennsylvania’s Brent Marks earned the label of “King Brent XXXIX” by racing to victory lane in Saturday evening’s 39th Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway.
After starting sixth, Marks worked his way past Brian Brown for the lead on the 22nd of 40 laps and kept Donny Schatz at bay over the final rounds to take the $175,000 win after pocketing $100,000 in the Historical Big One just two nights earlier.
“This is just unreal,” Marks commented in victory lane. “This car has just been so good and so fun to drive, I feel so confident behind the wheel. I won the Kings Royal and the Historical Big One in the same week, holy crap this is amazing.”
While Kerry Madsen gunned into the early lead from the outside front row, Marks wasted little time making his way to third as “The Mad Man” paced the early rounds ahead of Brian Brown.
After Brad Sweet cut a right rear tire after seven laps, Brown took advantage of the restart to race into the lead with Marks following on his coattails to take over second. After swapping the lead on the 21st lap, Marks made his move into the lead a lap later and stayed out the rest of the way to secure the win even after a caution with nine to go when Sheldon Haudenschild tagged the turn one wall and spun.
Running third on the final restart, Schatz made a run at Marks in the closing rounds but fell short.
“When the tire pressure went down on those cautions, I felt like I was a lot better,” Schatz said afterward. “But after a few laps I started losing ground and there wasn’t much I could do with him.”
After starting from the pole position, Carson Macedo slipped back several spots in the early going before rallying back to claim the show position. “I was just biding my time early, I knew the car would come to me. It did, but it just wasn’t enough to finish it off.”
Logan Schuchart crossed the stripe fourth with fifth-starter Kyle Larson rounding out the top five. After leading the way for 14 rounds, Brown settled for sixth with Cory Eliason, 22nd-starter Anthony Macri, David Gravel and Madsen completing the top ten.
Justin Peck established the night’s quickest time in qualifying at 13.170 seconds before Marks, Eliason, Brown, Schuchart, Madsen and Macedo topped heat race action to earn the front three-row starting positions for the feature.
