Lonnie Wheatley, BEAVER DAM, Wis. (June 17, 2022) – There was simply no stopping Sheldon Haudenschild in Friday night’s World of Outlaws card at Beaver Dam Raceway.
After establishing a new track record of 11.025-seconds in qualifying atop the 1/3-mile clay oval, the Wooster, Ohio racer won the Dash to earn the pole position for the feature and then went essentially unchallenged for 35 laps to secure his series-leading sixth win of the season aboard the NOS Energy Drink No. 17 Sprint Car.
After the initial pair of starts in the 35-lapper were waved off by a pair of red-flag incidents including a wild three-car skirmish down the backstretch and into turn three that eliminated Kraig Kinser, Josh Schneiderman and J.J. Hickle and then a turn two ride for James McFadden, Haudenschild outgunned fellow front row starter David Gravel for the lead at the outset.
From there, Haudenschild shrugged off cautions after three laps and then 16 laps before charging on to victory lane unabated with Carson Macedo chasing unsuccessfully in second. Macedo tried to challenge but to no avail.
“I knew Macedo would be good with the way this place was set up tonight,” Haudenschild commented afterward. “He showed me his nose on an early restart and I knew I had to switch it up and get going.”
Macedo commented that, “Lap cars were tough tonight. You had to hustle around them with how much grip the bottom had. I knew that was probably my best bet, but I just couldn’t get there when I needed to.”
Gravel filled out the podium after starting up front. “I felt like we maybe had a car fast enough to win, but you need the perfect start with how the track was, and we got that, but that red flag to start really hurt us.”
Spencer Bayston raced across the stipe in fourth with Logan Schuchart rounding out the top five.
Current series points leader Brad Sweet advanced three positions to sixth with Rico Abreu, 13th-starter Giovanni Scelzi, Donny Schatz and Aaron Reutzel completing the top ten.
After Haudenschild set the standard in qualifying over the 33-car field, Gravel, Macedo, Schuchart and Reutzel topped heat race action with Rookie contender Noah Gass topping the “B” Main.
